Underwater posing is a unique skill that requires an understanding of how buoyancy and gravity influence movement beneath the surface. In my experience, I’ve found that embracing the fluidity of water is essential for creating natural and graceful poses.

Understanding Buoyancy and Gravity: Working with, rather than against, gravity is key to achieving beautiful underwater poses. By guiding my models to move with the gentle currents and adjust their buoyancy, I can capture images that exude elegance and poise.

Communication and Direction: Clear communication is vital when directing models underwater. Using hand signals and pre-established cues, I ensure that my vision for the shot is effectively conveyed, even in the absence of verbal communication.

Embracing Fluidity and Movement: Movement is a central element of underwater photography, and I love incorporating it into my compositions. By encouraging my models to embrace the fluidity of their surroundings, I capture images that are dynamic and captivating.

Utilizing Props and Fabric: Props and flowing fabrics add an extra dimension to underwater portraits, creating visual interest and enhancing the sense of movement. From billowing dresses to ethereal ribbons, I’ve experimented with a variety of props to elevate my underwater compositions.

Working with Natural Light: Understanding how natural light behaves underwater is crucial for achieving stunning underwater portraits. By positioning my models in relation to the light source and leveraging the unique qualities of underwater light, I create images that are both dramatic and ethereal.

Posture and Body Language: Posing is not just about striking a pose; it’s about conveying emotion and mood through body language. I pay close attention to my model’s posture and movement, guiding them to express themselves authentically underwater.

Safety Considerations: Safety is always my top priority during underwater shoots. From ensuring that my models are comfortable and properly trained for underwater work to maintaining situational awareness at all times, I take every precaution to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of capturing countless breathtaking underwater portraits. In this post, I’ll share some of my favorite images, along with insights into the posing techniques and creative decisions that went into creating them.
