Make up for an underwater photo shoot or not?

When considering makeup for an underwater photoshoot, it's essential to balance several factors. Here are some considerations:
Water Conditions: If the shoot involves clear water and minimal movement, makeup can enhance the subject’s appearance by adding definition and color to features that may appear washed out underwater.

Waterproof Makeup: Opt for high-quality, waterproof makeup products designed specifically for underwater use. These products are formulated to withstand water exposure and maintain their integrity, preventing smudging or running.

Natural Look: Underwater photography often emphasizes a natural, ethereal aesthetic. Consider using minimal makeup to enhance the subject’s features without appearing overly done. Soft, neutral tones can complement the underwater environment while still providing subtle enhancement.

Avoid Heavy Makeup: Heavy makeup can appear exaggerated or unnatural underwater due to the distortion caused by water. Avoid heavy foundation, dramatic eye makeup, or bold lip colors, as they may appear exaggerated or out of place.

Communication with the Team: Collaborate closely with the photographer, makeup artist (if applicable), and the model to ensure everyone is aligned on the desired look for the shoot. Discuss the style, theme, and aesthetic goals to determine the most appropriate makeup approach.

Test Shoots: Conducting test shoots or rehearsals beforehand allows the team to assess how makeup translates underwater and make any necessary adjustments. This ensures that the final images meet expectations and capture the desired aesthetic.

Ultimately, whether to use makeup for an underwater shoot depends on the specific vision for the project and the desired outcome. It’s essential to consider factors such as water conditions, makeup type, and desired aesthetic to achieve stunning underwater portraits.

My  underwater photo shoots are carried out in cenotes or in the sea, so I always warn my models to use little makeup and that it is always waterproof so as not to contaminate nature. If the session is carried out in a pool, we will be freer to use more makeup, but as long as it is waterproof for good results.
